Alliance San Diego

MISSION

  • OUR MISSION is to build collective power in order to create a more inclusive democracy where everyone can participate with dignity.
  • OUR VISION: An inclusive democracy where all people can achieve their full potential in an environment of harmony, safety, equality and justice.
  • THEORY OF CHANGE: By working together to engage effectively in the civic process, we can make systemic change and shape a future that belongs to all of us.

Who We Are

Alliance San Diego (formally known as Equality Alliance of San Diego) is a community organization whose mission is to build collective power to create an inclusive democracy where everyone can participate fully with dignity.

Since 2007, we have mobilized communities to fuel change and reshape the world so that it is more reflective of and responsive to our diversity. We believe that systemic change is achieved, and maintained, by working together to build a society that is truly inclusive. Our work is to develop leaders, engage communities, shape narratives, change policies, and protect rights while standing on the core values of inclusion, compassion, justice, collaboration, and integrity.

Where We Work

We believe that by working together to engage effectively in the civic process, we can make systemic change and shape a future that belongs to all of us. Our work is informed by our lived experience and our commitment to our community to create an inclusive democracy where all people can achieve their full potential in an environment of harmony, safety, equality and justice. Our civic engagement work is focused geographically in San Diego County but our levers of change are at all levels of government: local, state, federal and international. We are a binational human rights organization.

BASE DEMOGRAPHICS

We have a voter base of over 125,000 in San Diego County, most of those are in the City of San Diego. These are all people we have talked to one-on-one and who align with our values of creating an inclusive, fair, and just democracy.

We initiated contact with our voter base because they were once infrequent voters, who are disproportionately voters of color, young voters, new citizen voters, and low-income voters. Voters we contact turn out 5 points higher than the countywide electorate in primary and general elections. When these voters and others like them are empowered with information and encouraged to vote, they do.

ISSUES WE CARE ABOUT

Our efforts to engage voters between and during elections is elevating the level of engagement of these communities for the long-term not just for a single moment. This has tremendous benefits to expanding participation in our democracy and strengthens decision making on the questions that matter most to our communities.

ASD has an engagement model not traditional organizing or single issue. We base build with voters, coalitions, supporters, donors, communications and all of this in turn is community power building.

PAST CAMPAIGN SUCCESS

  • ASD boosted participation in the 2020 census by conducting outreach in 47 hard to count tracts, increasing the average participation in these areas from 42% in 2010 to 62% in 2020, helping San Diego county obtain one of the highest Relf-response rates in California.
  • ASD conducted large-scale outreach to voters in the 2020 elections and in the 2021 gubernatorial recall election. In total, we contacted over 100,000 voters through phone calls, mail and email and we reached over 1 million voters with digital outreach. This work built on over a decade of outreach to infrequent voters, yielding a record turnout for San Diego County in 2020 and one of the highest turnout rates in California in 2021.
